– Stepping Out – The Fall – One of Mark’s greatest moments, a scarily explicit hit job on truth and lies and media and what it means to be in a rock band but one of our greatest and lick to die for, never been a band like these guys plus he was a sweetheart when I interviewed him: that’s all – A
– Pride – Husker Du – Superb roar of punk intensity – A
– Salad Days – Mac Demarco – It is possible he has only one more song this strong and he has already released it – A
– Amidinine – Bombino – Rocker from Niger, crosses over adding rock guitar to the mix of Middle Eastern pop – B+
– Deadline – Young Fathers – Pounding drums marshal it out on this one: “don’t you turn my home against me even if my house is empty” – B+
– Old Rock And Roll – Their masterpiece, one of the best songs of the year – A+
– Coal Tattoo – Warren Hayes – Seven minutes long but it takes a quarter of an hour to get there – D
– Dixie – Ashley Monroe – Maybe I need to concentrate harder, but this ain’t getting me there – C+
