10 Songs: March 27th, 2015

1 – Ain’t Nothing You Can Do – Bobby “Blue” Bland – I am so used to the Van Morrison cover, I was caught on just how close Van stayed to the original. Bland sounds great here, he wails himself out on the chorus plus it has the simplicity of a received truth – A+

2 – Silver Dagger – Joan Baez – The 1907 folk song couldn’t be performed sweeter but could be a lot longer – A

3 – King Tut – Steve Martin – He’s my favorite honky – A

4 – Fifth Fanfare For The Uncommon Woman – Joan Towers – Some fanfare as well, the brass is a subtle herardling – B+

5 – Always True To You In My Fashion – Lisa Kirk – 1948, and Cole Porter is writing this catchy ode to prostitution – A+

6 – Rubber Duckie – Ernie – This makes bathtime lots of fun – A

7 – The Boys From Lough – Michael Coleman – Before Michael came to New York from Ireland, Irish music had been seriously watered down. It took this fiddler to reminds us what it sounded like – A

8 – Nothing Even Matters – Lauryn Hill – I wish she had made an album with D’Angelo… it isn’t too old, you know…

9 – I Don’t Even Know Here Name – Leo “Bud” Welch – What is it that makes blues such an old mans game, at 83 years old this guy is like viagra with a double shot of espresso chaser – A

10 – I Can’t Explain – Teenagerhood never unexpressed better – A
