10 Songs: Friday, July 3rd 2015

1 – Future Is Mine – DJ Cassidy – Featuring Chromeo, this takes the sound of prime disco and tries to copy it, to exhilarating effect, this is like a step backwards into the present, tinny but smooth as well – B+

2 – This Summer – Maroon 5 Vs Alesso – The also ran DJ does a great remix job on a first rate Maroon 5 song, if everybody is gonna put the season in their song titles, let’s make sure the songs are this good – B+

3 – I Want You Back – Jackson 5 – time is a raging monster, it leaves no stone unturned in its complete and total annihilation of you… if you’re lucky. Where are we now, when we were once this? – A+

4 – Stay In My Corner – The Arcs – Dan Auerbach’s new song sounds like early Rod Stewart without the vocals, you know the Rod who covered “I’d Rather Go Blind”, without the vocals. Nice guitar solo – B-

5 – Bend – Chet Faker – Soulful – B-

6 – I Love You More Than You’ll Ever Know – Donny Hathaway – A soulful, horrifying dirge of desire – A

7 – The Valley – Miguel – A big sex song for me right this minute – A

8 – For Those Of Us ABout To Rock (We Salute You) – Ac/DC – The great AC/DC opener from 1981, Brian sounds like Plant without the attitude  – A-

9 – Come On Siobhan – Titus Andronicus – “In a past-life regression / dream sequence, Our Hero, with his own ancestor for his avatar, tries to persuade his love interest” – Stickles gives solipsism whole new levels of meaning as well as placing nothing in the lyric to suggest an avatar or a dream or a regression. Luckily, the songs remain strong  – B+

10 – Renegades – X Ambassadors – You spend a lot of your life  thinking aout hitting the big time, then a Jeep commercial uses your song, and whomp, you’re an alt rock superstar -C
