Isn’t this cover really scary, in a good way? This giant pulp-fiction mosquito is truly nightmarish and the baby is literally about to burst the page… it was designed by cartoonist and animator Beomsik Shimbe Shim for the next Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ album, naturally entitled 'Mosquito', that will be released on April 16th via Interscope.
Singer frontgirl Karen O talked a little bit about the sound of it in a press release: ‘We took a more playful, LO-FI approach to songwriting. Much of the music was demoed in our little basement studio in Manhattan with drum machines, a shitty sample keyboard and tons of delay — which we called the soup. I think this record has more moodier and tripped-out songs than you've ever heard from us.’
Lo-fi may be, but there was nothing modest about the production, as the Yeah Yeah Yeahs hired no less than TV on the Radio’s Dave Sitek and Nick Launay separately, and even James Murphy for just one tune.
This past weekend the band had a show at the Glass House in Pomona California, and they debuted two new songs, which were recorded by fans. ‘Earth’ seemed to be an electro-pop with a minimalist instrumentation, but was that a cowbell at the beginning? It sure showcased the unique singing and sighing-roar of Karen O, who seemed to be just ready for a pit worker job. The other song, ‘Mosquito/Suck Young Blood’ is a more aggressive glam-classic rock part, and another excuse for the O-girl to give out all her freaky weirdness,… damn people, couldn’t any of you help her with that zebra cape that strangled her the whole time?
