Woody Fuller And UnContested Retro Hip Hop

Being retro has always been pretty hip and cool, especially nowadays. Retro Nikes. Old Skool hair dos. I see Ninja Turtle printed shirts from the 90’s and such, as much as I see the horse playing some Polo on collard shirts.

To honor ‘retroness’ and the 25th anniversary of everyones favorite Italian plumbers, Mario and Luigi, Brooklyn rapper, Never Yet Contested, released new song “Retro,” as well as an online music video, that pays serious homage to the evolution of video games. Starting with Atari, and moving from NES to Super NES to Sega… and finally shouting out some XBox360, Never Yet Contested doesn’t skip a beat.
With clips of him blowing into a game cartridge to make it work, ( haven’t done that since I broke out the N64 for a friendly game of Mario Cart a few months back), to action shots of our past favorites, I was getting goose bumps from all this childhood nostalgia. Obviously, rapping about Super Mario Bros., he didn’t forget about the past greats such as, Sonic, Mortal Combat, Battle Toads, Dunk Hunt, and my fav Donkey Kong Country.

Its a neat song; I love the video, its very original, keeping its authenticity and staying retro as can be. My only problem is the chorus is a bit overwhelming, I obviously remember that cheat code, but shit, now everyone is going to know it. Whats the fun in cheating if everyone is doing it?
