With every passing year the Barrett legend looms larger. In Tom Stoppard’s Rock And Roll produced on Broadway last year, Barrett provides a strange backdrop for the wondrous otherness of life and of music and indeed, of life in cambridge in the mid sixties. And both The Pipers At The Gates Of Dawn and A Saucerful Of Secrets remain completely other to the rest of Pink Floyd. It’s as though John Lennon quit after With The Beatles. The 1967 “See Emily Play” remains a signature of English psychedelia. I was ten years old when Pipers and my big brother played it constantly. It remains a masterpiece.
