Here are the things I have done for William Beckett. Ok, not for him, but because of him.
Drove 7 and a half hours on a hot summer day booked a $200.00 hotel room and sweat my ass off in an open amphitheater.
2- purchased a fan club membership for exclusive meet and greet that proved so pathetic a cattle call that I can’t even tell you how poorly that was thrown together.
But that was years ago in his The Academy Is… days. Now I have had the distinct pleasure of sitting down with Beckett for a quiet interview and seen him in venue so intimate I felt like home.
I have met quite a few musicians in my day and I can say without exaggeration that William Beckett is the most contradictory of them all.
When sitting with him in the empty club pre show he was soft spoken, somewhat distracted and almost painfully shy. Soft and calm, distant and so very young, he ran a sharp contrast to his wide smile movie star handsome stage performer I would see just hours later. He can turn it on and off like a switch but one thing is undeniable.
William Beckett is phenomenally talented and finally without bells and whistles and hype there is a way to see that as clear as day.
As he performs his new EP “What Will Be” in acoustic and hipster black and white you get a real feel for the reserved and almost sullen Beckett. What is going on in that head of his and how amazing his voice sounds when done so raw.
