Wild Flag "Runs Its Course" And More's The Pity

really really Wild Flag

I caught Wild Flag opening for Bright Eyes back in 2011 and they were one of the best rock shows I saw all years, a tower of riot grrl power that had me writing here “As the set went on Carrie came across like twenty kinds of rock stars, she has charisma and she has charm, and the band are like an alt rock jam band and they do it well.”

This was before the eponymous debut was released and while the album didn’t match the live fire, it wasn’t bad and anyway, it was the first album, there was plenty except there wasn’t plenty of time at all! The two thirds of Sleater Kinney super riot grrls band broke up earlier this week. Drummer Janet Weiss said  “It was great but I think it just kinda ran its course…It’s hard to have a band when you live five hours apart by plane.”

Along with Janet there was Carrie Brownstein, of Sleater-Kinney, Mary Timony, of Helium, and keyboardist Rebecca Cole, formerly of Elephant Six band the Minders, though pon stage Carrie was really something to watch and while I am sure she was something else she is working on right now, Wild Flag had the songs and they had the chemistry. You trying besting Bright Eyes at Radio City.

Bummer.
