It has been three years since I last saw My Morning Jacket live on stage and they have not been great years for Jim James on record. The pointless George Harrison tribute EP was followed by thetremendously disappointing Monsters Of Folk side prohject was followed by the bizarrely anti-commercial Circuital (up for a best alternative rock album Grammy) and at this point in time I was ready to pass on the MSG gig.
But, through out that, whenever a writer went to an MMJ concert they came back in awe, I, myself, thought their New Year's Eve 2008 was the one to beit. So despite having, for no reason I can see, no affection at all for Band Of Horses, I work right next to Madison Square Garden so could save myself the extortionate Ticketmaster fees and it was worth $55.50 to me.
I've been prepping for tonight except MMJ don't have a set setlist except they open with the dreary "Victory Song". The band have five albums, I know one of them very well, two of them OK, and the rest not so much, so I am gonna be struggling for song reoognition all the way through it. My gut says… it will be heavy n the Circuital.
My gut also says I will be very, very happy I went.
