You remember Marie Lynn, right? Five years ago she went to Nashville for us and a little while later reviewed Bright Eyes. Well, I remained friends though she hasn’t written for us again since then.
On the phone a coupla days ago I asked Marie what she was listening to and in response she sent me her most played list off her Ipod. “When U want to play music where I know I’m gonna love every song, I play this”, she explained. “These are the songs I never get tired of.”
This isn’t entirely accurate, in the mid 00s she was on a steady diet of Bright Eyes and my feeling is her most played was reset around 2009. But Thao, Bon Iver, Rural Alberta Advantage, Cat Power -none of these are shockers. Marie may well be Saddle Creek’s target defined: a young, media professional.
First I am gonna pick ten songs off her list and review em, add a spotify link and then list everything.
1. Skinny Love – Bon Iver – For Emma, Forever Ago – Singlehandedly made Justin Vernon a superstar, his extreme loner falsetto folkie persona solidified forever and ever in one song – B+
2. Good Night – The Rural Alberta Advantage – Departing – This is where the Saddle Creek comment lives on; a mdeium size act for Conor’s label but a typical indie folk pop sound – B+
3. Basic Space -The xx – xx – I was surprised by the inclusion of The xx but thinking about it, it is like the closest electronica can get to sad slow indie – B
4. Genesis – Grimes – Genesis – Made a fan out of Grimes who found better living through electronics by making tracks on sticky sound and hooks galore – A-
5. Our Swords – Band of Horses – Everything All the Time – Interesting song, works off a guitar lick, two notes, played under the song till the end – B
6. Bag of Hammers -Thao – We Brave Bee Stings and All – A fave of Marie’s, they are too twee and nursery rhyme in their darkness for my taste – C
7. Never Let Me Go – Florence + The Machine – I lost interest in these guys after a crappy show at Radio City Music Hall a coupla years ago, so let me just say that Ceremonials was a great album anyway and Welch remains one of the pop scenes top vocalists – A
8. Tightrope – Yeasayer – Dark Was the Night – Remember when Brooklyn was the new Brooklyn? Well, Yeasayer were important round about then – B
9. I Don’t Blame You – Cat Power – You Are Free – She mistakes depression for emotional clairity – C
