May be Ariel Pink has become so famous that he needs to be imitated, may be it is simply funny just to impersonate him, I am not sure but when I stumbled on this new video by French singer Soko, I couldn’t tell what I was watching.
Soko is also an actress and this could explain a lot,… either she has studied Pink’s mannerism for hours (they are in fact buddies) or she is quite talented at picking someone’s attitude, or both! For a little while I thought I was watching the famous underground singer.
She directed and produced this new video for the song ‘Lovetrap’, from her new album ‘My Dreams Dictate My Reality’. Of course, the track features Ariel Pink (on vocals) and honestly, the tune would have totally been at ease on his last album ‘Pom Pom’. Wearing a pink (of course) stripped shirt, dark sunglasses and chopped black nail polish, the Pink-Soko character affronts the nightlife with a tote bag on the shoulder, while acting erratically and chain-smoking the whole time, and when she gets to visit Harvard and Stones on Hollywood boulevard, Soko is playing a gig… I once crossed the path of Pink on Glendale boulevard while going to the Echoplex, and I must say this impersonation is totally hilarious and right on.
And the music? It starts very goth-like, almost like a Cure-homage, before becoming the catchiest and Pink-iest chorus ever, a cool dance-floor with druggy and harmonizing vocals floating between dream and reality, leaving the goths totally perplex
If you like Ariel Pink you will laugh at this one and probably love the song, but if you don’t like him, well, this may irritate you. I just think Soko should get some acting nomination for this role.
