I hadn’t realized that Phoenix had become so big! Not only they are headlining Saturday night at Coachella this year, but they are also big in Asia? At least this is what they want us to believe with their new video for ‘Entertainment’, the first single for their forthcoming album ‘Bankrupt’.
This is quite bizarre, and if you had previously listened to the song, you had probably noticed the Asian inspiration at the beginning, but nobody was expected this whole Chinese-Korean soap opera! I mean after a few seconds, the song partially leaves its fake exotic vibe and takes the most boring (to me) pop-synth road. And I have no idea what’s going on in this drama-shogun-military-olympic-games propaganda which starts with a children choir, continues with Samurais (wait a minute, aren’t they Japanese?) a pop star, fireworks and a few bloody murders; it's a sort of medley of the worst of all-Asian cultures and it's probably not meant to make any sense.
It looks as kitchy as the song sounds unimaginative and I bet that this video will leave a lot of people totally clueless. What was Phoenix thinking?
