Depending on your level of tolerance for fascinating things that don’t necessarily make sense, you will find this video fantastic or weirdly lame.
Beach House’s new video for ‘Wishes’, from their last album ‘Bloom’, features Ray Wise (Twin Peaks) as a circus/stadium football charismatic leader, and a bunch of cheerleaders auditioning for the Cirque du Soleil or the Hunger Games. Wise lip-syncs the whole song better than Beyonce did, in a font of an audience wearing creepy horse masks, and before riding on a beautiful white horse rearing up with fireworks in the background, as he was Roy Rogers at the end of a movie.
Never ethereal synth-pop music has been more mismatched with the images and this is of course totally intentional. This contrast combined by the randomness of the whole thing may do the trick, bringing enough surprises both grandiose and kitsch – just look at the clothes these people are wearing – to keep anyone interested for four minutes.
Eric Wareheim, of the absurdist comedy duo Tim & Eric, directed this mini movie which may demonstrate why art can be moving even when you cannot make sense of it.
