VE to NME: “Shallow To Get Excited Over Sales”

In their recent cover interview with New Musical Express , Vampire Weekend claimed it would be shallow to get excited about their album reaching number one in the charts. “The meaningful accomplishments are internal. It’s shallow to be proud of how many records you’ve sold.”
Eh?
In a consumer society where success and failure is based upon sales, reaching number one is an achievement. Not caring about reaching number one is the equivalent of not caring that you won the division series in baseball.
If you don’t care who wins, why bother playing the game?
