45s from 69 Continues: BOMBASTIC!!!! by Mike Nessing

Break In The Road – Betty Harris-Wow! What a bombastic track! Where has this been all my life? Incredible! Bayou funk!

Brother Love’s Travelling Salvation Show – Neil Diamond-Reminds me of Presley’s “Suspicious Minds”.. not so much the song, but the approach.

By The Time I Get To Phoenix – Isaac Hayes-the narration at the beginning confuses me, but by the time Black Moses starts singing, it’s pure gold
Can I Change My Mind – Tyrone Davis- One of those instances where the DJ flipped the platter over and played the B side. Then it spent 5 weeks at #1 on Billboard’s R&B chart. Made it to #3 on the pop chart, too.(okay I didn’t know this, but I did bother to look it up so you don’t have to).

Can’t Find My Way Home – Blind Faith – This album played non-stop at my house for most of 1969.

Carry Me Back – The Rascals-Wild piano track. Not one of their most well known tunes, but if Dino Danelli is drumming, then I wanna hear it. A blue-eyed soul rave-up.

Chelsea Morning – Joni Mitchell- really, really nice. OK I blew this one off. It IS nice, tho’

Cherry Hill Park – Billy Joe Royal-To me, the vocals have a Bobby James kinda vibe. It is pretty racy for it’s time. Great bridge.

China Cat Sunflower – Grateful Dead-Just when I started to think it was redundant, this thing really takes off. Loved it.

Choice Of Colors – The Impressions -Rock NYC correspondent Bob Nevin gave me an Impressions compilation CD long ago that I regretfully lost. I should just go to Amazon and but all their stuff. Some of the most incredibly soulful grooves I’ve ever had the pleasure of hearing.

Cinnamon Girl – Neil Young/Crazy Horse-Brilliant how the handclaps double with the snare drum. Neil, double tracked and harmonizing with himself. Great in every way. That one note guitar solo, I can go on and on. Love everything about it.

Cissy Strut – The Meters-More New Orleans funk. This is just slaying me. Kind of an eye opener to have so much music like this during this year. Note to self, 1969 was a great year for soul music.

Clean Up Your Own Back Yard – Elvis Presley-Even this one is uber soulful and funky.

Cold Turkey – The Plastic Ono Band-Dr. Winston O’ Boogie at the height of his powers

Color Him Father – The Winstons – more incredible soul from 1969. So far, thats the big revelation during this listening session.
