I’ve seen Vampire Weekend twice, once last year at Summerstage when they were glorious in the middle of a summer storm and once a coupla months later when they stank up a sold out Terminal 5. But whatever I think of them live their debut album was one of the best of 2008. They were a sorta indie talk on Paul Simon and African rhythms, a lo fi Graceland if you will.
VE have been recording the follow up Contra in LA for months and the new record sounded as though it was gonna be a bit iffy. They told Rolling Stone: “The record has a sunny vibe befitting locales far different than the outer borough of New York. “These songs would be perfect for driving up the Pacific coast,” Yuck, right? Well, I’ve heard a song off Contra called “Horchata” (a type of Spanish cocktail) and it is a gorgeous calypso and great fun. The album is due January 12th, the song you can download now from vampireweekend.com.
