World Goth Day? Is there such a thing? Yes, and it is May 22nd according to worldgothday.com. The goth scene will gather ‘to celebrate its own being’ and to show ‘its presence known to the rest of the world’.
The bizarre fest is relatively recent and everything started with a day of special programming on BBC 6 in 2009 by UK DJs, DJ Cruel Britannia and martin oldgoth.
But what can they do beside playing goth music? What about baking ‘goth day' cakes and generally just had fun with the idea’ as has suggested DJ Cruel Britannia. So is it like Halloween bis with costumes and candies? I guess… but let’s face it goth clothing styles are so mainstream these days (hello Hot Topic), it hardly feels like an event.
Not only the two DJs have launched a website, but they have merchandise and a compilation CD from oldgoth with sale proceeds going to charity.
They even have the World Goth Day Awards, with 17 categories and a page inviting everyone to vote. Of course the votes end up on May 22nd (UK time).

In a way, the whole idea is to do a make-over to the goth scene:
‘World Goth Day is all about this kind of positive promotion, we encourage people to use the day to raise money for charity and to be seen in a more positive light’, declared oldgoth to the LAWeekly.
But before anything else, it is about the music, so find your old Bauhaus, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Sisters of Mercy’s CDs, it is gonna be a goth fest.
