The Facebook story movie “The Social Network” is excellent but we don’t care about that here. We care about the Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross Soundtrack which is also excellent.
I listened to it cold a coupla weeks ago and liked it fine but not that fine. In context, it is a very very good. The opening titles the score is a haunting and somewhat scary buzziness synth, computerized with a distilled horror, not movie, but impending sense of something not so good.
The second time it overtakes the movie is the inventors of Facebook Mark Zuckerberg and Napster Sean Parker, the latter a hipster and the former in awe. Justin Timberlake as Sean speaks a mile a minute and Trent’s sound track pounds away at a127 bpms, a wild adrenaline rush of mac and pro-tools hammering and sliding the point across.
The songs on the soundtrack are intensely irrelevant, reflecting the date, 1993, not at all. Still, always a pleasure to hear 10ccs “Dreadlock Holiday” and Lennon via Beatle “Baby, I’m A Rich Man”, Zuckerbeg is Jewish and there may be an ultimate in joke here. Legend has it Lennon wrote the song for manager Brian Epstein and it originally went “Baby, You’re A Rich Fag Jew”.”
