After swearing I was gonna pass on the Tom Petty Beacon Theater residency and even writing an entire post about how I would not be shelling out a fortune to a bandit with a website for brokered tickets in a post here, I changed my mind and went the bucks.

Why?

First the why nots.

1. I’ve seen Petty live three times and he was disappointing all three. The last time was maybe 2008 at Prudential and I walked out.

2. It sold out and I don’t wanna go the bucks.

Now here is why I changed my mind.

1. I run a music site and it is a big concert.

2. The rare opportunity to see Petty outside of an Arena.

3. Three’s the charm?

So anyway I went the bucks and have no idea whether I made a mistake and since the concert doesn’t kickoff till May 16th, I don’t know what the setlist looks like yet. But here is a setlist from 2012…

1. Listen To Her Hearts – All Byrdsy twang – A

2. You Wreck Me – Still Byrdsy twang but with a garage feel – B+

3. I Won’t Back Down – Choppy rhythm guitar and Southern American Brit Explosion – B+

4. Here Comes My Girl – A blues lick unfurls – B+

5. Handle With Care – Harrison’s masterpiece credited to all five members of the band  – A+

6. Good Enough – Here things head south, Tom was pushing the tedious Mojo at the time – C

7. Oh Well – Great Mac song, he performed it pretty well on the Live Anthology – B+

8. Something Big – Nice Rickenbacker intro but goes nowhere – C-

9. Don’t Come Round Here No More – Southern pop, smart drum pattern moves it – B

10. Free Fallin’ – “She’s a good girl, crazy about Elvis…” – A+

11. It’s Good To Be King – Wildflowers is a big album for Tom, but at the midway point, this is a mistake – D+

12. Carol – “Climb into my machine so we can cruise on out… ” – A+

13.Learning To Fly – The picture of classic rock – B+

14. Yer So Bad – Third song off Full Moon Fever – B+

15. I Should Have Known It – His second song off Mojo as the night reaches the seventh inning stretch. Dunno if he will still be pushing the product at the Beacon – B

16. Refugee – Made him a start for famn the torpadoes good reason – A+

17. Runnin’ Down A Dream – One of Full Moon Fever’s top tracks – A

18. Mary Jane’s Last Dance – Fan favorite

19 Two Men Talking – I don’t know it!

20. American Girl – One of the greatest American anthems of all time – A+

Notice anything missing? Where the hell is “You Don’t Know How It Feels”??? If I’d been there I’dda been maaaad!
