When I went to see Elvis Depressedly and Sorority Noise, I noticed a band called Toasted Plastic was on the bill. I listened to them the day of, pretty casually, but still really enjoyed them. So much so, that I picked up their crewneck sweatshirt (extremely comfy), and a tape of theirs of the album “June Highs” (extremely catchy). I’ve been listening to it nonstop and it’s really grown on me.
“Empty Hands” is a fantastic track. I love how the band experiments with tempos and isn’t afraid to break patterns; it keeps their music exciting and unique and strange. The punk element of their music shines through in this song with the shouty vocals and intense drums. It feels rushed and classic, like it could be from a punk band who was big in the late 70s. It’s brilliant.
My favorite song of theirs is “Looming”. For some reason, during the “I bet it’s hitting your soft spot by now/ destructive criticism allowed/choices that help mold the ones we’ve become, for one thing I’m happy I know where I’m from” reminds me of Conor Oberst’s voice in his harder Bright Eyes/Desaparecidos stuff, and it is great and refreshing.
Not only is the trio extremely good at producing an intriguing punk sound, but they’re also genuinely talented musicians when it comes down to it. The bassist, Duke Greene, is incredible. As a fellow bassist, I’m blown away by his abilities. As for Sam Kendrick, guitarist and vocalist, it’s not easy to do either of those things but when he puts the two together he’s like a god. His guitar skills are impeccable and his voice fits so well with the music. And the backbone of it all is Cameron Konner, on the drums, and also doing vocals. He’s so great, and one of the best drummers I’ve seen in a while. Put all these boys together, and it’s a powerhouse of unmatched perfection.
Definitely check them out. They’re incredibly impressive.
