Thom Yorke likes surprises, the earlier-than-expected release of ‘The King of Limbs’ was a surprise, his DJ set last week in LA was another one, and these 2 tracks, posted on ateaseweb.com on Tuesday, is his last little wonder,.. or is it?
‘Ego’ and ‘Mirror’ are the two tracks of his new collaboration with dubstep artist Burial and electronica composer Four Tet and are released as a single on Text Records.
I ‘d say that, after giving a listen early yesterday morning, I wanted to go back right to bed! 'Ego' is that long (six minutes and half) boring repetitive druggy dance beats that I must have heard a thousand times before, with buried voices and lamenting Yorke’s vocals under electronics and some keyboard. I’m not that impressed. And ‘Mirror’ restarts where ‘Ego’ has stopped, with the same boredom in Yorke’s voice but more ethereal background vocals, more electronics, a metallic fat incessant beat, and then suddenly a soulful female voice during the last minute.
But I know almost nothing about this strange world of electronica, Iman told me he likes these two songs, … me? I did not even know these two artists who have already collaborated on the single ‘Moth-Wolf’ Cub’ in 2009
The two tracks have aired on Rinse FM and can be heard here:
