The Pixies Fired Their Bassist For Being Too Enthusiastic?

A happy Pixies family

What’s going on with the Pixies? When I saw them a few months ago, their new bassist Kim Shattuck seemed to have the time of her life (actually she may have had too much fun as she learnt a few days ago) but everyone looked fine and dandy. She was replacing their long-time bassist Kim Deal, and despite the fact that I could hear her vocals much, the audience was in love, literally, telling her ‘Kim we love you’ every five minutes.

Well it’s ‘Kim no more’ once again, but if the first one left, the second one was fired, ha!  when their song ‘Debaser’ takes a whole new meaning! Despite the fact she seems to be kind of cool with the situation, ‘they’re nice people. I’m still a fan of the Pixies’, she can’t be totally happy with the way it happened. This is what she told NME, and her description reflects so much what I saw at the El Rey last September:

‘I was surprised. Everything had gone well, the reviews were all good and the fans were super-nice about everything. They were like, “We love you, New Kim!” We said goodbye at the airport, and the following morning, the manager called me and said: “The band has made the decision to go with another bass player.” I was shocked… I get the feeling they’re more introverted people than I am. Nobody really talked about deep issues, at least out loud. There was a show at the Mayan in Los Angeles where I got overly enthusiastic and jumped into the crowd, and I know they weren’t thrilled about that. When I got offstage the manager told me not to do that again. I said, “Really, for my own safety?” And he said, “No, because the Pixies don’t do that.”… I would have preferred it is they told me face to face as a group, but they’re nice people. I’m still a fan of the Pixies!’

Ouch! It has to hurt when you receive this kind of phone call, plus ‘the Pixies don’t do that’? I don’t know, do they want very hard to sound like a blasé bunch, or to play some we-are-too-cool-for-having-fun hipsters …it’s very pretentious, plus they aren’t even brave enough to tell her face to face? Pussies Pixies!

They have replaced her with Paz Lenchantin, and I hope she is aware she has to contain her enthusiasm. At the El Rey, Shattuck was the one moving around, because you don’t see much action coming from Black Francis or the other guys, so, now, expect to be bored even more…
