Ok, I am a kid of the 70's Muppets are in my blood. The original crew the Kermit, Ernie and Big Bird brigade. Bad ass ghetto living stoop sitting ABC singers.
The Muppets evolved from Saturday Night pervy adult puppets to the PBS children's show to a prime time program for the whole family.
They did some time in the 80's with The Muppet Show, and I loved that. Swedish Chef, Fozzie and Gonzo but it was never Sesame Street. It was vaudeville shtick and it was fun, but it didn't hold the same heartwarm. But I adore anything from youth, Hippity Hops and Big Wheels, and yes, Muppets. I have been squealing with excitement to see the new film and well .. I saw it.
The story is simple- earn money save the theater/get the gang back together.
The side story involves brothers one muppet one human and how they grow up and grow in acceptance of their individuality. Songs like "Am I A Man or Am I A Muppet" stole the show from the other headache creating "Smells Like Teen Spirit" Barbershop Quartet. I will say that the chickens version of "Forget You" and the 5 year old girl in front of me dancing like a lunatic- that kid was a riot.
Big production numbers are always cool and so rare that you have to appreciate the grandeur of them. Jason Segel and Amy Adams are not lovable but they do the job. Adams is a bit old- she reminded me of the character Pam in the TV show The Office. She didn't fit right no matter how wide she opened her eyes. She seems like a heavy smoker with weariness to her- I could totally be wrong but she seems older than she is.
But I will say that the film was uplifting, had some laugh out lout moments and that Jack Black lost his cool right after School of Rock. Best tune? Closing Credits to my Muppet fave "Mana Mana", if you go STAY for the credits- it was great.
B- ish
