WEEK FIFTEEN
Golden Slumbers: The problem with Saints is there aren’t too many of them around and god knows John Lennon was more human than most so his sainthood is a little, how you say, disillusioning. When people speak of Lennon, they miss something: he was a serial philanderer, a wife beater, he neglected his son Julian, and he had a violent streak. But here is the kicker: he changed. The wife being beaten was Cynthia Lennon (and it was their child Julian being ignored). Cynthia died last week from cancer at the age of 75.
Recorded: this week belong to Sufjan Stevens, whose Carrie And Lowell, a beautiful and moving piece of music about the death of his mother and the ghost of his childhood, which is a huge leap forward, is everything people are telling you it is. Next week belongs to Young Fathers.
Live: alt-j at MSG were much much better than we had any right to hope; art rockers with the instinct of pop stars (although not the moves)
Sports: YES… Kentucky go down in a thrilling ball game till the last five minutes when Wisconsin took over and got revenge. Duke is next.Meanwhile, A-Rod at first base? Wow, that’s the thing about sports.
Television: “Going Clear” makes the case against Scientology… again.
Politics: If Republicans keep on siding against gays, Hispanics, blacks, all religious other than Christianity, the poor, the less poor and the middle class, they are sure to get 1% of the vote.
