A little on the dog days of summer, right? Spider bags was a disappointment, not a disaster but not their best work, Peter and Mike are dilettantes, The Murder City Devils a little too fussy for my taste. I guess spoon by default.
The first four (“Summer Of 69” a Golden Boys cover) everything you dreamt it would be, and the next four less focused, more inclined to art rock, less hard more spooky and as the last song “Eyes Of Death” ends the feedback comes in just like the beginning of the album, s if Spider bags have created a self contained world. And they have. Just not their best one.
we patiently await the inevitable passing of time so we can get our hands on, er, the Beck Song Reader? well, certainly Van Dyke Parks who we can assume will not be streaming his next album on Spotify, Spider Bags out August 5th (can’t wait for that one, their last was my fave album of 2012), Jenny Lewis and Blake Mills (though not together) and Jerry Lee Lewis
Here comes summer, school is out on happy days and the wild world of music is coming your ways so… what are we looking forward to here? I didn’t care less about Jenny Lewis but after her terrific turn at Governors Ball, I am wondering if this will be a biggie for her. Sinead O’Connor –because, well, because she is an enormously consistent recording artist, and Spider Bags who released the best album of 2012
If all this does is further Spider bags reach well good for them, and since everybody knows each other, Finn used to work for Merge, I am sure this is considered tidings of great joy cum what took them so damn long (Spider Bags formed in 2006).
This is the sort of meeting of a subculture defined by so many failed attempts to reunite in a moment and also extened the moment into the present. The moment was the Lower east Side in the late 1970s, and the extension was musical and triumphant.
