Up in the Origami loft, Jesse Woods played a few of his peaceful tuneful songs showing all these influences and beyond, as I could hear a little bit of the Everly Brothers on ‘Ugly Dress’, just before the interesting chorus repeating ‘I’ll be waiting in northern California for you’. All I can say is that I didn’t see any of the tough side of the football player
Tuesday night was not a good night to drive eastbound in LA, there was a traffic jam on Sunset boulevard, and it took me way too much time to go to Origami Vinyl! It is on the Dodger Stadium route and there probably was some baseball event, but this did not prevent the store to fill up for Superchunk’s Mac McCaughan’s set.
Their bumpy music had drawn a large crowd at Origami Vinyl, and the trio was quite loud as their songs had often a moment when their unusual and shaky collages were wakened up by Della Peruti’s shrill guitar,… it was a strange marriage but it worked as some people had started dancing in the store, moving along Della Peruti’s distant vocals with an almost incantational nature
The OC quartet played an in-store at Origami Vinyl on Saturday night and did totally repeat their dynamic performance, up in the store loft, which doesn’t allow any safe stage diving, but the spirit was there, as their music is definitively mosh-pit-fun-crowd-surfing material.
The four of them played a few of their poppy songs, which were diverse but shared these boy-girl harmonies with nervously excited beats and a punkish background, while switching instruments several times during the show, navigating between keyboard, guitar, bass and drums
he started singing the western-ambiance-hymn-to-Jesus ‘Long Lost Friend’, and some melancholic instrumentals that sounded right away very familiar
I would not pretend to say I have totally figured out their music and have put them in these little groovy-pop-songs-reminiscent-of-famous-bands boxes, certainly not! But you have to start somewhere, and it is true that their sunny sound evoked the 60s wrapped into instantaneously catchy and sweet melodies
I am not sure how to qualify their hiccup music, punk? Post-punk? Garage-rock? All of the above? It was more assaulting projectile music sprinkled with a few surfing riffs and tribal drumming than anything else to me.
From the Origami loft, Matt Perozzi on bass and Thomas Jefferson on drums were playing ina sort of violent urgency which wasn’t taking itself seriously, as the two guys were screaming like mad men some weird and repetitive vocals, furiously vociferating after some invisible enemy, while seemingly running away from it.
Pyramid Vritra was in fact a duo, rapping over a sluggish-druggy sometimes jazzy or even electronic beats,… people were laughing, as they visibly knew the lyrics, which were delivered with detachment and a sort of second degree, venting some frustrations, sometimes rhythmically with dynamic beats, other times more melodically
focusing on the keyboard and the distant-dreamy vocals
rock crossed with an appealing modern punk attitude
a spacey atmosphere and were slowly moving most of the time with twangy bright guitars
contrast between the elaborate dark and moody music, the sensual dance beats and her powerful vocals
this sounds like a surrealist ad found on craiglist.
