The half hour set flies by and from the opening “Stay All Night” through “The Story”, KING have perfect control of their performance; they are purposeful and smart. It is enticing and clever and the songs fold into each other with vocal hooks running on top of and behind other vocal hooks
This is what they’d been lead to believe, and it answered her question as to why the place had been quiet: it was the difference between admiration, we all admire her emotionalism and also her lack of pretension, her ability to be deadly serious without taking herself deadly serious, and love. You could see Le Poisson Rouge fall in love with her.
With his shoulder length hair and pale beauty, Owens is never a commanding figure, tall and lanky he is ethereal, like he is clinging to life by a thread and a pizza, but the craziness of the first two Girls album has changed into a studious, more careful sound. And I prefer it.
the set was a steady and consistent. It was, indeed, a little strange. The theory is the that most sets build momentum but the truth is they don’t: they sink in the middle and regain buoyancy towards the end. But Yellow Ostrich got better as they went on
The set goes back as far as 2007 and stops off at all points, with the second song a terrific, much livelier and deadlier “Songs For Your Girlfriend” and has a late set deep track “By Tundra” and in between hits the hits and hits the misses and the band cream the lot. I mean, the lot. With Gareth, a stockier Gareth with a beer belly, ascending each and every song.
Lianne isn’t a draggy presense, she is a charming, amused MC and she stops even her weakest songs from being run of mill singer songwriter fodder with a consistently entertaining delivery. She is impossible to dislike
The musicianship -which was kinda hidden, under the surface, comes right to the front in 2012 They were Brit Invasion inverters, they are now elder statesman masters of pop pomp.

I never ever said Damian Abraham wasn’t a great frontman. Quite the opposite, he is so good he is irreplaceable. And if this performance of David Comes Alive is to be his last, he delivered and then some.
The Webster Hall gig was the last word on The Monitor and while none of the other times they’ve played locally since have been anything less than great, we’ve been waiting for new material. And we got it.
