Hurray For The Riff Raff
they were so great when I saw em at Summerstage
I know, I know, I’m late to Hurray For The Riff Raff but I am making up ground! Superb at Summerstage on Sunday, I went back to the album Small Town Heroes and I could actually hear it! Otherwise, note the two mainstream pop songs in the middle there. Yeah, I know, I know but “Bang Bang” caught my ear.
This is songwriting with the highest quality and it never waivers and the band, the times where it jams, jams very well, but the tightness here only allows for an occasional letting go: an odd place for a woman who cut her teeth on the LES punk rock scene to find herself.
It is not every day a live performance changes instantaneously from a non believer to a fan, and it is not that I think Hurray For The Riff Raff were actually that great, they weren’t bad but not that great, but the songs revealed their stickiness and suddenly you could hear just how strong the riffs in the riff raff were. Blake Shelton was a blast
Inside Out – Spoon – This is about as different as indie rock can get, the 4 on the floor beat is used for a strange deconstruction of an indie song which hums along like an wall of sound power point presentation – B+
Hurray For The Riff Raff – Soul beauty about New Orleans area by one Alynda Lee Segarra, who digs deep for this one and though Ceu could sue it is such a rip of “You Won’t regret It”, she probably won’t.- A-
