What Went Down – Foals – This song is so great it gives people the wrong idea about the band, we think they’re better than they are because right here they’ve managed a gigantic riff into a whirlwind of sound – A

Foals are giving away free cassette tapes of their new album – yes you read this correctly, cassettes are back! – but for this they have launched a world-wide treasure hunt, hiding cassettes at various locations, and sharing the GPS coordinates via social media. It’s cryptic stuff if you don’t know what they are talking about, stuff like 45.523047, -122.684571 #WhatWentDown,
This boils down to a toss up between The Weeknd and Foals, and I am going with Foals because every song I’ve heard off their new album has been aces in my book and I am still waiting for “I Can’t Feel My Face” to click (though not “The Hills”)
Mountain At My Gate – Foals – The honest voice of alt rock from the UK, sound the way Elbow might if they were less ambitious and also sound the way you hope rockers might with a rush at the end that storms both the mountain and the gate – B+
If Radiohead are the Oxford upstarts who went hi-tech and Elbow the university boys most likely to stand a round at their local, Foals are the kid brothers who take themselves way too seriously… with predictable results. But any band with lines like “I fell for a girl with a port-wine stain, I knew her initials but never her name” are alright in my book and this blistering rocker is as good as Elbow at their best. A shocker – A-
