The Sun Sessions By Mary Magpie

What do you get when you take rocks ‘Classics’ and present them to a modern day kid?  Will these ‘masterpieces’ still create a swoon?  This is the first of a series of lab rat experiences on the Magpie.  We start with the quintessential Elvis Sun Sessions-  hb
Elvis Presley? Not my kind of music, but considered a genious, a God if you will. I hadn’t ever truly been interested in him. Regardless, I listened to The Sun Sessions.

“That’s All Right Mama” is one of those songs that you can tell was not produced and performed recently. It has an older feel to it, not good or bad, just … there.

To be honest, I wouldn’t be able to tell “Blue Moon of Kentucky” apart from really any other Elvis song and it’s a bit redundant.

“I Don’t Care if the Sun Don’t Shine” is better than the other songs, by a longshot. A bit of a modern, catchy persona about it, which is very interesting.

“Good Rockin’ Tonight” shines a teensy sliver of light onto today’s upbeat acoustic scene, which is pretty cool to see.

“Milk Cow Blues Boogie” is unique to say the least. It really shows just how Elvis truly invented the “rockabilly” genre. There’s a whole lot of ‘billy’ here.

As for “You’re a Heartbreaker”, I can say that it’s good. Still not something I’d listen to if I had the choice, but it’s not bad. I think it’s songs like these that are the reason for why Mr. Presley is still a household name today.

“I’m Left, You’re Right, She’s Gone” reminds me of some of the more heartbroken Nevershoutnever! in a weird, subconscious way.

“Baby, Let’s Play House” has just given me the strong urge to listen to old The Rocket Summer albums. Bryce obviously is inspired by Presley, and this song shows it tons. Squeeky clean with a dash of innuendo.

“Mystery Train” is like the ideal road trip song. It has that summery 12-hour-long-car-ride-so-put-it-on-repeat feel and it’s pleasing.

The song “I Forgot To Remember To Forget” has a mind-blowing title and is mind blowing in itself. Elvis’ voice is outstandingly modern in this song and the beat of the music is unlike any I’ve ever heard.

“I’ll Never Let You Go” is so sweet and heartfelt and it’s incredible to feel how much emotion there is in Elvis’ voice. It’s also super catchy.

“I Love You Because” is almost reminiscent of a modern day love song, which shows that Presleys stamp is everywhere. It’s a beautiful song.

By now, I’ve noticed certain melodies seem familiar- because modern artists today are so inspired by the King of rock ‘n roll.

“Trying To Get To You” is one of those songs that if you speed up the instrumentals and added more guitars and such, it’d sound truly very modern. I can see where modern bands can find influence here.

“Blue Moon” can lull you to sleep, but if you truly listen, you get caught up in the simple beauty of this song. From the vocals, to the melody, to the music itself, it’s pure.

“Just Because” makes me want to get up and dance and not care who stares. It’s so upbeat and peppy that it’s a day brightener. 🙂

Listening to this album has made me realize that Elvis Presley is like the God of rock music- without him, there’d be nothing. A building block for all that followed.
