Beck has released another song, and like the previous we started to stream a few weeks ago, it won’t appear on either of his two upcoming albums! According to Rolling Stone, he debuted the new one, entitled ’I Won’t Be Long’, at Paris’ Days off Festival ‘by providing concertgoers with peelaway cards leading to the online stream’,… nice concert gift!

He seems to continue his Beck-electronica tendency but ’I Won’t Be Long’ doesn’t sound anything like his curiously elaborated ‘Befriended’. No, this new one is a smooth ride, beside a few occasional stop-starts, and an effortless beat runs through it, which, for some reasons, reminds me something from the 80s,… think something between the Police and the Cure? Of course it turns a little weirder mid way, but not too Beck-weird, it’s a tranquil and smooth soundscape from start to finish with a mild nostalgic vibe and a dream-pop chorus ‘I won’t be long’,

The song will be released as a 12” vinyl single on July 8th, and can be pre-ordered at www.beckiwontbelong.com. The single includes the original mix, an unreleased 14:49 extended mix on the b-side, and a 320 kbps download card.

I know that every single band has been suggested for this track, from Spoon to Deerhunter, Grizzly Bear –and I am just talking about the reviews, the video comments are even trippier and wilder!  Even the Beatles’ Blue Jay Way’ have been connected to the song – because of a line in the lyrics and probably because two Beatles are on the wall on this enigmatic painting that is used as the background of the video – but honestly I don’t hear much of all this. Beck is hard to figure out these days, and that’s a good thing.
