Stepdad “My Leather, My Fur, My Nails” Video, Reviewed

A good friend of mine just introduced me to Stepdad’s music a few days ago and holy shit I have not been able to listen to anything else. Their sound is an intravenous hit of synth pop that blows my mind every time I listen to it. “My Leather, My Fur, My Nails” was one of the band’s first singles and was voted the #7 song of the year by The Pop Sucker's Top 100 songs of 2010. That being said, I can’t believe I have never heard of Stepdad or “My Leather, My Fur, My Nails” before.
I wanted to review this video specifically because it very well might be the best suited video for a song ever in the history of ever. Because of the crazy, trippy, synthed-out sound of “My Leather, My Fur, My Nails”, I can’t imagine the music video for this song being anything less than crazy, trippy, and synthed-out. With whirling colors, blurring pictures, and the duo that form the band being super imposed upon pictures and flying across the screen as they sing, this music video is the visual embodiment of the song. I guarantee if watching this music video is the first time you hear “My Leather, My Fur, My Nails”, you’ll immediately fall in love with it.

One of the most impressive parts of any song is the lyrics and it’s one of the things that will make or break a song for me. Fortunately, “My Leather, My Fur, My Nails” continually blows me away with both the musicality and the lyrics. I don’t even follow the real meaning of the lyrics but with lines like “She wants a coat made of my leather, and my fur, and my nails; she’s always cold despite the weather, she needs sun, she’s so pale” and “Take me out of water, shrink me in the dryer. I don’t suit my skin.”, one can very easily get the lyrics stuck in one’s head.

I hate to say that there are some songs meant to be heard whilst under the influence but this is certainly a song that will lodge itself in your head after watching it post-blunt. But regardless of your current sobriety, “My Leather, My Fur, My Nails” is one of the greatest electro-pop songs to have ever been made and I am eagerly looking forward to seeing Stepdad live. Wildlife Pop, Stepdad’s most recent album, has been out on iTunes since June of this year and is equally as wonderful as “My Leather, My Fur, My Nails”.
