Devo is one of those bands that alot of people thought were a joke. I certainly didn't. I remember seeing the video for "Jocko Homo" on Saturday Night Live and actually being afraid. That shit was pretty weird. So weird, in fact, I had to run out and buy their album. Yup a real live platter. "Are We Not Men".
It was actually a toss up on this perk song. 'The Girl U Want" or "Gut Feeling". "Girl" is just happy dance like a moron in your underwear fun. "Gut Feeling was a bit more dark and obscure. 'Theres something about the way you taste, that makes me wanna clear my throat', that and the infamous 'slap your mammy'.
I suggest we all time travel back to '77 or was it '78 before things got so pretty and polished and a bunch of freaks in industrial suits sang about stuff that made no damn sense. The quick repetitive backing music on both of these dittys is so incredibly timeless that as I listen now 33 years later it still makes me move.
Devo wasn't a joke, they got alot of laughs but these cats were the original hipsters. To like Devo in the early 80's made you one step away from plastic pocket protectors but it also made you rather cutting edge. They were amazing live Only July 19, 1979 this then 13 year old girl passed the burly ID checkers of the over 21 club to see them tear it up. No clue what those bouncers were high on but no way in hell did I look old enough to be there. Met some cool folks though!
