So I have my official 'Songs That Suck' series but rarely do I offer up something positive. I'm so snarky. So here we go- somewhat of a guilty pleasure 'cept I feel no guilt.
This came on my iPod today and it instantly had me sitting upright with a bit of pencil playing drum action going on. ELO not exactly the hippest band in 2011, I do believe some our writers loathe them (sorta how I hate Seger) but take a second wont you to listen to the incredible momentum in this song. Yeah, Jeff Lynn is really nasal and that falsetto is rather amusing but musically- beautiful.
This song is more effective than the 3pm trip to the snack machine. It simply wakes up your senses. Its a get up and dance sort of song that really should annoy me, but it does the exact opposite.
Again, we can pause and look at the man fro' on Lynn but I would rather listen to the song itself. Simplistic lyrics wonderful melody and a creepy sort of operatic chorus at the end for comedic relief
Oh and lets not forget the fabulous lyric
Sun is shinin' in the sky
There ain't a cloud in sight
It's stopped rainin' ev'rybody's in a play
And don't you know
It's a beautiful new day hey,hey
and its sealed with a Mr. Roboto sounding final line. Perfection.
To dated for you? Yeah? Quit bitchin' upstarts cuz obviously its NOT sqaure if that adorable God Daughter of Joe Strummer took a shot at it. Lily Allen makes this a chick song. You have to love the tortured accent. I really admire her for even giving this a go. She really took an upbeat song and made it really nail polish and slumber party pillow fight girlie. So, theres an interesting spin- Two great versions of the same song. Two totally different sounds and era's really. Both ELO and Allen use the same powerful drum beat to jump start your pulse. I would think the boys in the crowd would prefer ELO and the girls would side up with Lily, and me? Im flexible, I can swing either way.
