Heavy and dark, the first notes of ‘So On’ begin in a distant and mysterious place, which rapidly turns into a darker and doomer atmosphere of stomping noise, before the high-pitched-want-to-be-Black-Sabbath-or-Mars-Volta vocals of Andrew Giacumakis fill the desolation.
It’s all powerful, very 70s’ heavy rock with these ascending-descending guitars, with a stoner metal envy and a certain post-rock sound, exploding into more despair without being too heavy.
I actually was not expected this kind of vocals after such an introduction, may be because the gloomy grove was reminding me a little bit of Mogwai’s style,… it has the same cinematic vision but it is something else.
‘So On’ is the first track of Moab’s justly-entitled debut album ‘Ab Ovo’ (it means from the beginning), which has been out since last Tuesday via Kemado Records.
I have hardly listened to their whole album from the Los Angeles trio, and the second track, ‘Dimensioner’, sounds even more Sabbath-esque, but I’m saying this in a good way!
