Sam Kinison hosted this episode of SNL. The network ran it on a 7 second delay. Sam had a rep of defying the censors and SNL wasn’t gonna let that happen on their watch.
This episode is during one of the shows darker period. Still reeling from the loss of the original ‘Not Ready For Prime Time Players’. I am not sure when they dropped that title, having noticed it just recently at cast announcement. Now it’s ‘starring’ and ‘featuring’ and it sucks, but I digress.
Here we see a healthy and not so jowly Lou Reed grunting his way through the peppy “I Love You Suzanne”. Already an icon, already a legend and still horrible on the ears.
So much has been said and debated since Lou’s death. I have actually taken the time to go through his music again. I decided to objectively listen to his catalog in an attempt to understand why there is so much worship. In the end I have discovered that a couple songs have a line or two that I find impressive.
Let me restate that- ONE OR TWO SONGS having A LINE OR TWO that I find impressive. Thus my opinion stands. Lou Reed is the most over rated performer of the ‘punk’ era. The only thing ‘punk’ about him was his shitty attitude.
But here he is grunting and nasal, frog lidded and arrogant. Come to think of it, it’s a shame he passed. He would make a perfect guest on this seasons God awful line up.
