Singles Going Steady: New Album Reviews For Week Of August 6th, 2012

Renaissance – Marcus Miller -Played bass on Miles Davis penultimate albums Tutu and Amandia, recorded in the mid 1980s and considered his last hurrah. And when Miller keeps to bass heavy funk jazz workouts here, the superb "Mr Clean" and the sanctificial "Detroit" this is pretty unassailably great. The rest of the album is too distracted from what it should be doing – Grade: B+

Live In London – Birdy – From 2011 but I am just getting around to it. 15 years old time, this English singer takes modern pop art and pushes her voices till she embodies the overwrought with a sense of impending doom – Grade: B+

Declaration Of Independence – Colt Ford – The question isn't who is Ford, the question is why has nobody tried to rip off Kid Rock before. I guess Everlast did a little bit. But this is rebel country  plus hip hop taken to its logical extremes. It's a shame the songs suck – Grade: C+

The Invitation To The Voyage – Eugene McGuiness – 5 years ago, this guys was the next big thing. And it didn't happen and the reason is the songs are missing something and his voice is on the weak sight. SO despite the depth of his musical prowess, on the newbie he goes from a "There's A Tavern in The Town" wannabe to new wave neo soul in the span of a song, the songs aren't setting the world on fire – Grade: B

Future Rock – Outernational -rock nyc friends need Steve Albini not Tom Morello to capture their live passion on record. Or rather, what the fuck is with the drums? This misses, maybe the album won't – Grade: B

thefearofmissingout -thenewno2 – I appreciate Dhani Harrison's group aesthetic, just like daddy, I can sure live without his songs – Grade: D

Into The Missionfield – Drunken Prayer –  I can hear the Warren Zevon connection: they are both storytellers. The Hold Steady leader Craig Finn is probably a better comparison, they are both born again. I mean, I'm just guessing, but sure looks that way. Coming out as Christian is to 2012 is what coming out as gay was to 1972. All three  are smart lyricist. Also, anybody would be proud to have written "I Saw It With My Own Two Eyes" – Grade: B+
