Sinead O’Connor Inducted into People Rock NYC e Really Really Like Hall Of

Sinead O’connor is such a controversial figure it is ridiculously easy to convince yourself she’s a joke and a mess; a rock and roll apostate who can’t keep herself together. But the proof of a great singer lies in the recorded work and on stage O’Connor is a brilliance. I’ve seen her many times, I saw her at the Guiness Fleadgh on Randall’s Island outperform Van Morrison who came on just before her, I’ve seen her several times at the Beacon ignoring much of her past history for a huge chunk of the set and win the audience over through her gorgeous voice.

As for her recorded work. I am among those who can find nothing wrong with ANYTHING AT ALL she has recorded. I think Sinead is just about perfect. Listen to “This Is To Mother You” off the Gospel Oak EP. Here is the lyric:

This is to mother you
To comfort you and get you through
Through when your nights are lonely
Through when your dreams are only blue
This is to mother you
This is to be with you
To hold you and to kiss you too
For when you need me I will do
What your own mother didn’t do
Which is to mother you
All the pain that you have known
All the violence in your soul
All the ‘wrong’ things you have done
I will take from you when I am come
All mistakes made in distress
All your unhappiness
I will take away with my kiss, yes
I will give you tenderness
For child I am so glad I’ve found you
Although my arms have always been around you
Sweet bird although you did not see me
I saw you
And I’m here to mother you
To comfort you and get you through
Through when your nights are lonely
Through when your dreams are only blue
This is to mother you

Only one song true, but one song of many, many, many, from her self wrote “Madinka” off her first album The Lion And The Cobra thru her cover of “We People Who Are Darker Than Blue” from her latest album 2007s Theology whatever might get lost in the strangeness of her personal remains in tact in her music. I once played Sinead’s album of semi-obscure reggea classics Throw Down Your Arms to a rastaman and he almost fell thru the floor at the brilliance and correctnes and completeness of her interpretation. Mike had NO IDEA who Sinead was and he was still in awe of her.

For all Sinead’s fucked upness she exemplifies the title of one of her albums: Faith And Courage. We love her lots and lots and lots.
