Judd Apatow has to have the best indie music (and beyond) taste in the movie industry. I saw him once going backstage during a concert of the Eels, and his soundtracks are filled with all-time favorites. He is just a connoisseur and his upcoming film ‘This is 40’ doesn’t escape the rule.
We already had the chance to listen to Fiona Apple’s new song ‘Dull Tool’, especially written for the movie, and this time we get to listen to Ryan Adams’ song ‘Shining Thorough the Dark’.
Now, it’s not a new one, Adams had already released it on this homeless youth benefit CD Live From Nowhere Near You: Vol. II featuring tons of other artists, but he re-recorded it in a much punchier manner! The melancholic and almost depressing tune has now turned into a dynamic countrish live recording with much more than a guitar and a voice, and it has never sounded better.
According to Adams, ‘Shining Thorough the Dark’ was ‘the first track I wrote after my retirement’, and was written ‘post-meltdown, while laying in bed with the flu’.
You can listen to the old version below but you will have to go here to listen to the new version as it can exclusively be streamed on Entertainment Weekly music page.
