More greatness from the Zappa Family Trust.
On May 1st, Zappa records will release “Greasy Love Songs”, an audio documentary that celebrates the 1968 classic LP, ”Cruising With Ruben And The Jets”. An homage to the music and culture of his teenage world in 1950’s Southern California, The original 1968 stereo mix to be included here has been out of print for nearly four decades.
Among additional tracks included are alternate mono mixes, an unreleased cover of “Valerie” which enjoyed heavy rotation in the Mothers’ concerts circa 1967 and a version of “Love of My Life” from Studio Z.
Often misunderstood as a comedic send up, “Cruising” is in fact “a simultaneous parody and tribute” to the doo-wop style of Zappa’s youth and is nothing short of brilliant. The album actually got significant airplay back in 1968 on one or two radio stations in bible belt sections of the US. That airplay ceased once the disc jockeys found out it was actually Zappa.
