Rock-Pop Stars Are Self Serving?

Rock and pop stars are often self-centered, nothing new in that statement, and what they say or do can even be totally self-serving,… actually you have to wonder when they say or do something that is not self serving,

Here are a few examples that happened these past days:

Talking about his recent collaboration with Queens of The Stone Age, Elton John declared to the Daily Star ‘I think it’s probably the best rock album by any band in about five or six years’. Right or wrong – and I happen to really like the album, so he may be right – it is a tad self-serving because precisely he has a guest appearance on ‘…Like Clockwork’. How does it feel to be on the best rock of the last five years Elton? Okay, he could have said best album of the decade or even century, so he stayed quite reasonable there.

Paris Jackson tried to commit suicide just after she was told she couldn’t attend a Marilyn Manson concert, so the Goth rocker jumped on the occasion and said he had a message for Paris: ‘I hope you feel better. You will be on my guest list anytime you want’. So now, who is looking cool in the story? The guy who sides up with the troubled teen against the crazy family and generously offers a VIP ticket… and it doesn’t hurt that she is Michael Jackson’s daughter, really great publicity for Manson!

The Rolling Stones’ last tour has seen a parade of young hot stars invited as guests, from Taylor Swift to Katy Perry, Carrie Underwood, Gwen Stefani, and the next one is Arcade Fire’s Win Butler… Sure the Stones don’t need any publicity, or may be they do? These $600 seats were not selling that fast after all. Anyway, they did it because they could, they are rock’ n‘ roll royalties and everyone who would refuse to sing with Jagger would be a fool. But it sounded like crap most of the time, looked like an abuse of royal privilege and very self-serving in the we-are-cool-at-70-we-know-all-the-popular-hot-ones sense of the term. That would have been different if Mick Jagger had invited people like, let’s say… Kitten’s Chloe Chaidez (whom I just saw doing a killer set at the Jubilee fest), plus she would have been much better than Swift.

But the prize goes to Justin Bieber, is there anything this annoying brat does that is not self-serving anyway? I mean the Anne Frank’s remark was the apotheosis of self-servingness! This week, the teen idol has announced something which is actually more self-indulgent than self-serving: he is going to space with his manager on Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic’s SpaceShipTwo rocket plane, and he tweeted in response to the Virgin founder: ‘Let’s shoot a music video in space’. Once again it is a desperate look-at-me cry for attention. The program requires a $250,000 deposit, but it’s just pocket money for him. They could leave him in orbit somewhere up there, I just hope he does not bring his pet monkey or tries to cover a ‘Space Oddity’!
