All these years later I can still listen to “Penny Lane”! It remains nearly as fresh and evocative as when I first heard it. The process behind the recording sessions is fascinating and the song exists in no fewer than four released versions. The piccolo trumpet has become iconic and “Wet beneath the blue suburban skies” sounds positively psychedelic. “Penny Lane” is a perfect pop song.
