Uberlin is a great new song by 80s hipsters REM. The video, well its not that fabulous and actually really dumbs down a rather fantastic song. Aaron Johnson dancing and flipping around London. My thought is this is supposed to make you feel somewhat euphoric. Dont we all want to dance down a street? Well, then do it. Rather than watch some kid do it and think, how fun I wish I could’…. go freakin dance down the street. Its your right as a human to be an ass now and then. im really not sure if this song has some deep seeded menaing but its a German title and a Brit vid and the band is American so its basically a melting pot of nations.
The simple fact though is the song is really very good. Please dont let the eyebrow rasing video deter from that fact. I’d never consider Stipes vocals strong enough to cross decades but they have beautifully. Finally something to like from my generation.
