Greatest concert I’ve ever seen? Maybe not but way way up there, was Peggy Lee opening for Mel Torme at Carnegie Hall, in the mid-90s. She was sick and she had to be carried to an armchair and off the stage at the end.
Four simultaneous standing ovations. I have never heard an audience roar like this ever. The sultry, 50’s songstress known best for “Fever” today… not to mention “He’s A tramp” from Disney’s “Lady And The Tramp” (am I the only one who vastly prefers the 50s Disney cartoons to Pixar?)
One of the great pop and jazz singers of her generation, the woman wrote many of her own lyric, she remains a legend.
So while tipping my hat to Reese Witherspoon’s portrayal of June Carter Cash, the thought of Reese and Director Nora Ephrom feming out Peggy Lee is about as appealing as Cameron Crowe lending emotional depth to Marvin Gaye.
But that’s what they are doing… Reese secured the right from Peggy Lee, Nora is writing and directing…
Let‘s hope for the best and expect the worse.
