Rabbits Rabbits Rabbits At Origami Records In Echo Park, Saturday October 16th, 2010: Fuzzy -by Alyson Camus

There must be some reason Rabbits Rabbits Rabbits say it three times , it seems to have nothing to do with their emotional and moody noisy pop, fuzzy and loud guitars alternating with melancholic riffs, melodies building a desolated and at the same time soothing atmosphere.
A relatively new band from that musically fecund part of LA, Silver Lake/Echo Park,Rabbits Rabbits Rabbits were born out of the break-up of another band (Mezzanine Owls) and featuring guitarist Jack Burnside (Mezzanine Owls ), bassist Jenni Tarma (Kylie Minogue, Junior Senior, Har Mar Superstar, Eskimohunter), drummer Dan Horne (Beachwood Sparks, the Lilys, Mezzanine Owls, among others) and guitarist Chris Newcomer (Polls).

Last September, they released a debut EP recorded at Lone Palm Studio in Echo Park, and they have already played a few shows around LA, opened for Hot Hot Heat and, last night, were playing a free show at Origami records in Echo Park. This tiny store/record label recently got big names with a set from Jónsi today and Superchunk playing this coming Tuesday at noon (the reason why I cannot go!).

There was a lot of brightness in their music, and it was difficult not to like what I was hearing, which nevertheless sounded almost too familiar and musically safe at times, but was still maintaining a pleasant poppy shoegazing during the whole set.

‘Winter time’ was a good example of this strong brightness in the vocals, with daydreaming moments and a quiet fuzziness beneath the melody, alternating with louder triumphant parts. ‘Shot down’ in particular had this ascending sad melody, which was potentially ready to burst in a louder sound, but never really did, and ‘Right ones’ had all these possible comforting combinations of guitar riffs and background vocals turning in a noisier but clear-sounding ending.

Listening to their EP on line does not totally reflect the reality of their live sound, but before seeing them live, check this out:http://rabbitsrabbitsrabbits.bandcamp.com/
