The Playlist Sunday October 11th, 2009: Long Sermon

Close To You – Bebe & Cece Winans
Forever – CeCe Winans
Long Sermon – Brad Paisley
Youth Of The Nation – P.O.D.
Not the Donny and Marie of Gospel -they are way too good for that, but this brother and sister duo are also part of the Winan Gospel and reverse r&b’s steal of Gospel rhythms by using the soul template to sing songs of praise. Except it is in fact a secular song (and therefore a touch incestous). A strong soul song but not as good as Cece’s shaking the walls “Forever” off last years Gospel album of the year in my opinion Thy Kingdom Come. Hang around Brad Paisley long enough and you’ll fnd Jesus lurking there somewhere and “Long Sermon”,  off his debut album, the excellent Who Needs Pictures,  is a sweet spirited country-rock twang “I’ll tell you there ain’t nothing that’ll test your faith like a long sermon on a sunny Sunday”. P.O.D. (Point Of Departure) is easily the best Christian rock band. These cats are the real deal and  on”Youth Of The Nation” he imagines leaving home to school and walking into a Columbine type situation and getting two in the chest and dying. P.O.D. conclude: “There’s got to be more to life than this, there’s got to be more to everything I thought exists”. while a child chorus sing the song title. Powerful stuff: it takes prosylitizing to whole other levels.
Silver Wingss – Rosanne Cash
Hey Baby – Falu
Feel It In My Bones – Tiesto
American Ride -Toby Keith
Tigers In The Fire (Radio Edit) – Love Grenades – “I can do anything that I like, I can screw any one that’s nice and walk away” warns Wight and the way to hear her say it is on the original, the remixes are fine but don’t capture the chorus.
Litzomania (Yusik Remix) – Phoenix – Solves my Phoenix problems with an electric bass hook
Why Can’t He Be You – Patsy Cline
The Way I Loved You – Taylor Swift
Same sentiment, forty nine years apart.
Soundtrack 2 My Life – Kid Cudi – “I got 99 problems and they’re all bitches–“. Heavy duty stuff and the Kid at his best. The flute sample is all to add to this messiness of being, without ego, without arrogance, with pain and horror. “My heart’s an open sore that I hope heals soon”. Big time hip hop by a major playa who can write songs and can produce but needs to improve his MCing.
