I can’t believe Yoko Ono is 77 years old and at that age, she, with the help of her son Sean, have revived the Plastic Ono Band.
She has just announced two nights of concerts at the Orpheum Theater in LA, on October 1 and 2, which will be a reprise of her last February New-York shows whose special guests included Eric Clapton, Paul Simon, Bette Midler, Martha Wainwright, Scissor Sisters and members of Sonic Youth in addition to band mates Sean Lennon, Yuka Honda and Cornelius.
The shows featured music from the original Plastic Ono Band to Ono’s solo work to songs from her 2009 album “Between My Head and the Sky.”
This is part of the review the New York Times did about her February shows:
‘But Ms. Ono was never overshadowed. For the first half of the concert she performed songs from her 2009 album, “Between My Head and the Sky” (Chimera) and some older ones, like “Walking on Thin Ice.” The band vamped through hard rock, funk and psychedelic drone, closely following her voice. Singing melodies, Ms. Ono sounded high and fragile, as deliberately exposed as the lyrics. And her wordless sounds were by no means random. They were ghostly, furious, dreamy, caustic, urgent, exultant, orgasmic. Between the abstractions were tidings of peace-and-love optimism, of loss and loneliness, and of uncertainty. She ended her set with “Higa Noboru,” a ballad set to impressionistic piano chords: “I hear the fish calling from the ocean/I hear the birds warning from the sky,” she recited.’
Among the highlights of the February show, the Scissor Sisters did ‘The Sun Is Down’, Bette Midler sang ‘Yes, I’m Your Angel’, Paul Simon and his son Harper sang ‘Silverhorse’ and ‘Hold On’, and the original Plastic Ono Band with Eric Clapton, bassist Klaus Voormann and drummer Jim Keltner performed ‘Yer Blues’, ‘Death of Samantha’ and ‘Don’t Worry Kyoko’.
There’s gonna be a bunch of famous stars for the LA concerts, they are not announced yet but Yoko has promised there will be an equally star-studded roster of guests! Your guess…
There was a presale yesterday, but the tickets go on sale to the general public this Saturday, prices going from $60 to $150, which is not really cheap, but what do you want, how many times are you going to see Yoko Ono again?
