Tomorrow marks the 40th anniversary of the Pink Floyd’s album ‘The Dark Side of The Moon’. Forty years and still a t-shirt on nearly every floor of your local high school. Pink Floyd has staying power of legend. There music doesn’t age and I , for one, can name at least PF tunes without putting too much thought into it.
To commemorate the milestone Pink Floyd and EMI Music will unite fans globally with a playback of the album at pinkfloyd.com where fans can send their thoughts and photos to create a dark side of the moon. An online listening party with no bong. Starting at 00:01am GMT and for 24 hours fans can share thoughts using #DarkSide40 and watch the Floyd website as the messages combine to turn the moon dark. There is no report of complimentary ‘shrooms being served.
The cool thing about online communities is the amount of weirdo’s it can attract. I imagine this one to be a real humdinger. Not only is it the original fan but it’s there kid and maybe even their grandkid an intergenerational festival of Floyd. The best part is the computer savvy grandkid can usher gramps through the process.
What is remembered almost as much as the music is the album art prism. Storm Thorgerson of Hipgnosis created the artwork. Thorgerson has created 14 new prism designs for the 40th Anniversary that can be downloaded from Sunday. The 14 designs will piece together to create a celebratory poster. That’s going to suck up a lot of ink so be prepared on that.
Pinkfloyd.com, be there.
