Peaches DJ Extravaganza At The Henry Fonda Theater, Saturday October 20th 2012

I still don’t know what I have witnessed last Saturday night at the Henry Fonda theater, was it really a DJ set thing, or the Halloween gay parade? Peaches DJ extravaganza is certainly not your ordinary DJ set, but when I read ‘DJ’ in the headline, I was disappointed,… a DJ set? you mean that she will stay behind her turntable and will flip records? So boring,… but oh boy how wrong was I!

Peaches is the DJ queen of queer, and what she did last night went way beyond music, she served us a flamboyant, sexually charged, bizarre over-the-top performance incorporating provocative dances, baroque costumes, and should I say a lot of boobs? If she had been a cineaste, she may have been Russ Meyer or Fellini or John Waters, I am not sure, but female breasts and sex seem to be quite an obsession in Peaches colorful world, and excuse me for being quite new in this phantasmagoric world!

Appearing on stage wearing a gold latex suit and a mountain of golden hair with skulls on her head and shoulders, half yeti-lioness, half David-Bowie-version-Thor, with the sound of Flashdance’s ‘She's A Maniac’, Merrill Nisker was transforming herself at any minute. She soon removed the gold mane to wear this huge collar of fake boobs which were floating around her every time she would jump from one table to another. And she was restless, aggressive, playing with the cord of her mic as if it was a lasso, kicking up the air around her, crawling on her DJ set platform, then bouncing again on another table, while singing and doing some funny-obscene gestures along her electro-punk-dance beats.

And then there were these acrobatic extraordinaire dancers, who would regularly show up on stage and play creative burlesque skits, seemingly coming right from Peaches’ trashiest phantasms. There were robotic 50s air-navy girls, a tamer dangerously attracted by her pony girl, unicorns with giant tits and a strong libido, a matador and her bull, a werewolf, an angry woman on stilts, a fatal strip-teaser, Scheherazade doing a wet-hair contest,… and I don’t know what else! All this was highly entertaining, the crowd was acclaiming each one of these vignettes, especially because nobody was expecting what was coming next, and because almost each scene would end up in some sort of sexual act, even if bestiality was involved… these two sex-bomb unicorns even managed to get Peaches involved in a semi-sex-orgy,.. oh my! And this is happening during a pro-Mitt-Romney America? But this Canadian-via-Berlin girl couldn’t care less, she does what she wants, holding her gender-blending sexuality very high, squirting the crowd with champagne coming from bottles squeezed between her legs in a magnificent ejaculation. She even drank from this bottle and spit the content of her mouth on the adoring audience.

But the music in all this? It seemed so accessory to all these eccentricities, but her mix of house-rap-dance-electronic was perfect for this extravaganza, I just recognized her funky dance ‘Talk to me’, the aggressiveness of ‘Boys want to be her’, ‘Fuck the pain away’ during one of these comical sexual intercourses, ‘Trick or Treat’ sung surrounded by two giant inflatable black cats, her new single ‘Burst’, and a great cover of Tina Turner’s ‘Private dancer’.

She had then taken her Ziggy-space-rocker look and this couldn’t have been complete without a ‘Free Pussy Riot’ episode, fitting her like her second-skin suit,…actually I almost saw this one coming!

But when all this was over, she didn’t leave the stage, the dancers brought cardboard boxes filled with ‘Fuck the pain Away’ t-shirts, and Peaches announced she didn’t have cash but if we had $20 we could get a shirt… ‘We have your size!’ and the women began to sell a lot of t-shirts from the stage! I had never seen this, this woman is not only into avant-garde culture but she is also quite into marketing, that’s why queer culture dominates the world!
