If you've heard Black Hippy you know Black Hippy, formed in 2009 it is the crew that brought you Lamar Kendrick, who leads it along with Schoolboy Q, Ab-Soul, & Jay Rock, a sort of intensely arty and smart posse who are facing down modern pop and rebuilding into something else, but something I think doesn't quite work. Listen to 2011's "Rolling Stone" and 2012 seems to have been leading right back to it.
Black Hippy are headlining this years Paid Dues gig in March and the list of names is confusing : Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Dom Kennedy, Tech N9ne, De La Soul, Immortal Technique, Hopsin, Joey Badass, Grouch & Eligh. Tech N9ne and De La SOUL? Surely not.
I've been to the Paid Dues co-producers Hip Hop festival Rock The Bells twice and both times thought it was badly organized and too heavy at the top. But this concert in March seems to be fascinating mash up of modern hip hop. It is definitely artistically interested in its mainstream interests. Though compared to Odd Future, nothing here will ruffle the establishment.

The stream was also featured on the Paid Dues Festival website (www.paidduesfestival.com).
The all-day, all-ages, multi-stage event highlights the most renowned and emerging independent artists in Hip Hop. The upcoming festival will feature BLACK HIPPY (Kendrick Lamar + Schoolboy Q + Ab-Soul + Jay Rock), MACKLEMORE & RYAN LEWIS, DOM KENNEDY, TECH N9NE, DE LA SOUL, IMMORTAL TECHNIQUE, HOPSIN, JOEY BADASS, and GROUCH & ELIGH. More artists will be announced shortly.
Chang Weisberg, Guerilla Union founder and CEO, adds: “Paid Dues Festival is truly a unique platform. It allows artists to elevate their talents and presence. Dom Kennedy, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Black Hippy – only a few years ago, these artists were opening acts here. Now, they are full-fledge, and well deserving, headliners. Not only that: Paid Dues embraces all types of Hip Hop – old school, new school, underground, mainstream – the common denominator here is that they all embody the independent spirit, struggle and successes. This year’s lineup is so diverse, yet completely cohesive. There is no other place where you can get Black Hippy, De La Soul, Immortal Technique, and Joey Badass all in one day.”
